Inflation causes food prices to rise rapidly.

But it's not the branded products that are seeing the biggest price increases.

Kassel – The corona pandemic and the Ukraine war have caused inflation.

In order to avoid the increased prices caused by inflation, it might be an idea to buy fewer branded products.

But this plan would only work to a limited extent.

An analysis by the Lebensmittelzeitung (LZ) showed that the most recent food price increases mainly affect the cheapest own brands.

This phenomenon can be observed at Rewe and Edeka as well as at Aldi.

The lowest price increases are found in branded products.

Shopping at Aldi, Edeka, Rewe: Which brands are currently becoming particularly expensive

According to the industry, the prices would arise from trade, as the LZ reports.

In order to take a closer look at the topic,

Lebensmittel Zeitung

analyzed the data pool of the price app Smhaggle.

This app aims to show customers the cheapest price.

Edeka: 12.8%

Edeka: 18.9%

Edeka: 24.1%

Rewe: 11.8%

Rewe: 18.7%

Rewe: 23.9%

This app shows that the increase in the price of Rewe's own brands "ja" and "good and cheap" from Edeka was twice as high as for comparable branded products.

The more expensive own brands "Rewe Beste Wahl" and "Edeka", each including the organic brands, show an almost 50 percent higher price increase than the branded products.

The prices from January 2022 were compared with those in August of the same year.

Sven Reuter, founder and CEO of the Smhaggle operating company My-Valueshopping, concludes from this in the

Lebensmittel Zeitung

: "In relation to this, the retailers have implemented the lowest price increases for branded products." The analysis has shown that the price increases for the private labels are significantly higher .

"All dealers use the same strategy," notes Reuter.

"The prices of the significantly higher-margin private label products were obviously increased disproportionately at all retailers examined with the aim of increasing returns."

Price increases are also highest at Aldi for own brands

It's no different at the discounter Aldi Süd.

In the period from January to August 2022, the prices for own brands have also doubled here than for branded products.

Private label prices rose by 18 percent and branded products by 9 percent.

According to the analysis by

Lebensmittel Zeitung

, the focus on the company's own products is striking.

Supermarkets and discounters are increasingly trying to sell their own brands.

This can also be seen in the advertising.

This is how private labels are advertised more and more often.

One reason for this could therefore be to want to lure customers hit by inflation with the still cheaper own brands.

Rewe recently went ahead with such an innovation.

The range of the low-price own brand "ja" is to be enlarged.

In the course of this, however, there will be fewer products of the own-label value-added brand “Rewe Beste Wahl” in the future.

Rewe would like to be able to keep up with the discounters when it comes to low prices.

The "yes" range is to be increased to more than 1100 products.

Part of this innovation is also that some "Rewe Beste Wahl" products will be changed to "yes".

This makes groceries cheaper for customers.
