They are among the most successful musicians in Germany and keep working on joint projects: Jan Delay and Udo Lindenberg are close friends.

But because of the pandemic, they temporarily lost sight of each other.

According to Delay, Lindenberg distanced himself because of the corona virus.

"Of course I understand that, but I missed him," says Delay in an interview with "Zeit".

In the past, according to the rapper, they drove through the city in their car all night long and listened to music or talked.

But in recent years that has not been possible.

Lindenberg, who lives in Hamburg like Delay, is to be made an honorary citizen of the Hanseatic city on September 7th.

The 76-year-old is honored for his artistic work in the metropolis.

Delay congratulated him on this occasion with a personal text in »Zeit«.

Delay, whose real name is Jan Eißfeldt, has always been an ardent fan of Lindenberg.

"Because of him I started singing in the first place," he says in Die Zeit.

The duo worked together for the first time in 2005.

"We've always been there for each other ever since."

»I just wanted to be close to him again for a moment«

Delay is particularly impressed by the way they communicate with each other.

Accordingly, Lindenberg would sometimes just get up, do the windows and chat with other people.

“But then Udo sits down again and picks up where he stopped talking ten minutes earlier,” says Jan Delay.

“That's the thing: Udo isn't as screwed up as people think.

He is always razor-sharp at the start.«

The desire to see his old friend again was obviously very great.

After a concert by Lindenberg, Delay said he ambushed the 76-year-old.

He was able to talk through a window pane - at least.

"I just wanted to be close to him again for a moment, to say hello to him," says Jan Delay.

Lindenberg deserved his award anyway.

Mainly because he's a big man.

"A legendary guy with a huge heart."
