5 things you might not have known about coffee ("must miss" system)

Cereal and milk or toast and avocado sound like perfect pairings to start the morning with, but there are quite a few people who get out of bed every morning, make themselves coffee and light a cigarette.

or vice versa.

Now leave you with 'disgusting or not disgusting' - what makes caffeine and nicotine a perfect pair?

A new study by a team from the University of Florida may finally provide the answer.

The new study finds that certain chemical compounds found in roasted coffee beans may help ease the effects of morning nicotine cravings.

The authors of the study were able to identify two coffee compounds that appear to directly affect highly sensitive nicotine receptors in the brain.

For smokers, these receptors are often more sensitive after a long night without nicotine.

Although this discovery has not yet been studied and tested on humans, but Roger L.

Pace, a professor of pharmacology at the UF College of Medicine, says this work is an important step forward in our understanding of how caffeine and nicotine work together.

"Many people like caffeine in the morning, but there are other molecules in coffee that may explain why cigarette smokers need their coffee," notes Dr. Peka in a press release from the university.

The team applied a dark roasted coffee solution to a group of cells expressing a particular human nicotine receptor. The subsequent results led the researchers to conclude that a specific organic chemical compound found in coffee may help restore the function of the nicotine receptor that causes nicotine cravings in regular smokers.

Additionally, Dr. Peka has an even bigger hypothesis: One coffee compound, n-MP, may help curb morning nicotine cravings. He adds that he was initially intrigued by the idea that most daily smokers typically combine tobacco with coffee in the morning—and tobacco with alcohol in the evening. . Compared to previous research on the effect of alcohol on nicotine receptors, scientists focused much less on the effect of coffee.

"Many people seek coffee in the morning because of the caffeine.

But did coffee do anything different for smokers?

We wanted to know if there are other things in coffee that affect the nicotine receptors in the brain," concludes Dr. Peka.
