The World Health Organization has declared a state of emergency due to the spread of monkeypox (Reuters)
If you thought you were having a bad day, you should read the following case: Researchers in Italy have reported the first known case of someone testing positive for monkeypox, corona and HIV at the same time.
All three infections were new and following a short trip to Spain.
The patient, a 36-year-old Italian man, developed fever, sore throat, fatigue, headaches, and inflammation in the groin area about 9 days after returning from a 5-day trip to Spain, during which he had intercourse with men without a condom.
The man was found positive for corona 3 days after the onset of symptoms, according to a case report published in the Journal of Infection.
The man also suffered from corona in January, which came a few weeks after he was vaccinated.
Within hours of testing positive for the coronavirus, a rash appeared on his left arm and blisters spread over his body over the next few days, prompting him to go to the emergency room of a hospital in Catania, a city on the east coast of Sicily.
A series of tests taken at the hospital came back positive for monkeypox, COVID-19 and HIV.
The HIV test showed a high viral load and together with a negative test less than a year ago, the doctors realized that he had recently been infected.
A rare and dangerous combination.

The patient was released from the hospital after almost a week and recovered from the corona and monkeypox, although a small scar remained from the blisters on his hands.
"This case highlights how the symptoms of monkeypox and corona may overlap, and confirms how in the case of infection, anamnestic collection and sexual habits are essential to make the correct diagnosis," said the researchers from the University of Catania.
They also wrote that "the monkeypox oral swab was still positive after 20 days, indicating that these individuals may still be contagious for several days after clinical remission. Therefore, physicians should encourage appropriate precautions."
They added that "since this is the only reported case of the chickenpox virus, SARS-CoV-2 and HIV, there is still insufficient evidence to support that this combination may worsen the patient's condition. Considering the current corona epidemic and the daily increase in cases of monkeypox, the health systems There must be awareness of this case."
