Shortage of teachers: Pap Ndiaye recognizes a "tense situation" a week before the start of the school year

2022-08-25T20:20:22.526Z

This shortage of teachers has led to the recruitment of 3,000 contract workers, announced the Minister of National Education.

“We have to deal with the situation which is tense”.

These are the words of Pap Ndiaye, Minister of National Education, guest on the set of the 20 hours of France 2. The return to school is announced "in suitable conditions" but "not optimal" he hammered, specifying that the promised salary increase for teachers would take place in September 2023.

"The start of the new school year promises to be in conditions quite similar to last year, when conditions have deteriorated", he insisted, referring to the shortage of teachers which led to the hiring of " 3,000 contractors”.

“We are having difficulty recruiting tenured teachers,” conceded the minister.

He specified that these contract workers represented 0.3% of the total number of teachers.

One week before the start of the school year, there is a shortage of 1% of teachers in primary education, 8% in secondary education.

"It's a bit too much, I admit it very willingly, but we are doing the best we can to train them, support them," detailed the minister.

3,000 teachers still missing before the start of the school year

Despite these recruitments, there is still a shortage of 3,000 teachers for the start of the school year.

To achieve this, the Head of State Emmanuel Macron announced earlier today, at Sorbonne University, that the revaluation of teachers' salaries would be "continued" so that none of them begin their careers "unless of 2,000 euros net” per month.

Currently, the 2,000 euros net are reached at step 8 on the salary scale (between 13 and 14 years of seniority).

This wage increase, "it will be for the start of the 2023 school year", announced Pap Ndiaye.

“We are going to make proposals both for career entry, but also for career midfielders which are also problematic.

Other proposals will be made.

The reasons for which the profession is less attractive than in the past are not only salary.

The President of the Republic had also spoken of a 10% increase in (additional) remuneration in these announcements at the Élysée.

"We are going to discuss this fall with the trade unions to specify the conditions of this increase", added the Minister.

He also mentioned the shortage of school drivers ensuring that school transport "does not depend on the Ministry of National Education or the State but on the regions".

Despite everything, he admits “difficulties in recruiting school drivers” and assures that his teams are “very mobilized”.
