The US Department of Justice is investigating Donald Trump for allegedly removing confidential documents from the White House. He is now defending himself legally against it – and shortly before he submitted an important application.

Former US President Donald Trump filed a supplementary motion in court late Friday evening after his Florida home was searched.

In it he asks the court to prevent the government from examining the documents seized in Mar-a-Lago until a third party, a so-called "Special Master", can be appointed.

This is to independently monitor the examination of the documents.

The US Department of Justice announced on Friday that it was investigating former President Donald Trump over the removal of documents from the White House.

During a search of his Mar-a-Lago, Florida property, FBI agents seized several containers of classified records, including some classified as "top secret."

Trump's attorneys have now said their motion should be granted because the statement released on which the August 8 search of Trump's Florida home was based had been over-redacted.

It contains "almost no information that would allow (Trump) to understand why the raid took place or what was taken from his home."

The few lines that are not blacked out raise more questions than answers.

The former US President had already made a similar request on Monday.

However, the district judge responsible asked for more information and gave Trump a deadline of Friday.

Between newspaper articles and photos

In view of the great pressure in the politically sensitive case, Attorney General Merrick Garland had previously worked to have the search warrant and evidence of the items seized released.

The released 32-page document includes an affidavit by an unnamed FBI official, who said the agency reviewed and identified 184 "classification-marked" documents that contained "national defense information" after Trump shot January 15 had returned boxes of government papers.

They had been requested from the US National Archives.

According to the FBI, the documents classified as secret were found among other papers such as magazine articles and photos – some with handwritten notes.

Trump reacted outraged and described the action against him as a "witch hunt", as he had done in the past with other allegations.

In a post on the online platform Truth Social, which he co-founded, he accused the FBI and the Justice Department of "total PR deception".

He also called on the judge who authorized the search of his Florida home to resign.

"Judge Bruce Reinhart should never have allowed my home to be broken into," Trump wrote on social media.

The search caused quite a stir.

The fact that investigators search the house of a former president is considered a unique event in US history.

In addition, Trump has been fueling speculation for weeks that he could soon announce a bid for the next presidential election in November 2024.

The investigations are therefore doubly politically sensitive.
