Three Dutch soldiers were injured in a shootout in Indianapolis, Indiana.
One of them is in critical condition, the Ministry of Defense said in The Hague.
The other two are conscious and responsive.
The soldiers were in Indiana for an exercise.
The shooting happened in front of their hotel in the city of Indianapolis, but at the time the soldiers were out and about in their free time.
The background was initially unclear.
The police began investigations, so far there have been no arrests, the Ministry of Defense reported.
Several US media, citing the police, reported that officials were called to the downtown hotel around 3:30 a.m. (local time) on Saturday night.
There they would have found the three men with gunshot wounds.
Now several witnesses would be questioned, and the police followed up various clues, it is said.
A description of the potential perpetrators has not yet been published.
A local television station reported that it was the second time in a week that there had been shootings in Indianapolis, resulting in injuries.
The police also allegedly do not assume that it was accidental, it said.
