Several incendiary devices were thrown at a refugee accommodation in Leipzig on Saturday night.
The police were called by the security guard to the accommodation in the south-west of the city late on Friday evening, according to the Saxon State Criminal Police Office.
The security forces could have extinguished the fire quickly, so that only minor damage was caused.
Nobody was injured.
The perpetrators fled.
The "Task Force Violence" in the State Criminal Police Office took over the investigation.
There was initially no information about the perpetrators.
A politically motivated act was not ruled out.
Just a few days ago, the racist riots in Rostock-Lichtenhagen celebrated their 30th anniversary.
The communal accommodation is located in a prefabricated building in the district of Lausen-Grünau.
According to the city of Leipzig, it has 225 places.
Saxony's Interior Minister Armin Schuster (CDU) condemned the act.
It was "a warning sign that such inhuman crimes are not a thing of the past," he said.
As a result of the attack, "surveillance within the framework of patrol activities was increased for all accommodation for asylum seekers in Saxony".
