An Air France spokeswoman confirmed that the captain and first officer have been suspended and are being investigated for "grossly inappropriate behaviour", in which the two pilots allegedly engaged in physical violence towards each other mid-flight in the cockpit.

According to a report leaked by the French daily La Tribune, the cabin crew on the plane heard the pilots fighting through the cockpit door and had to go inside to separate the two.

One of the flight attendants then remained in the cockpit for the remainder of the flight to prevent the pilots from fighting again.

It is still unclear what caused the pilots to fight so badly during the flight between Geneva and Paris that took place in June 2022.

An Air France spokeswoman stated that the flight continued without further incidents and landed safely.

The captain and first officer were suspended pending the results of the company's internal investigation.

However, the revelation of the story comes just days after France's National Aviation Accident Agency published a highly critical report on the "fair safety" culture.

The Bureau d'enquêtes et d'analyses (BEA) report concluded that "there is a certain culture among Air France crews that encourages a tendency to disregard strict compliance with safety procedures." According to the BEA, incidents involving Air France remain "extremely limited ", but in several recent investigations, the agency found that the airline's crew failed to follow procedures "in a compliant manner," and the investigators claim that safety margins were reduced "without the crew actually being aware of it."

Profit at the expense of safety?

The above findings were part of the BEA report, which investigated the way Air France pilots handled a fuel leak on an Airbus A330 flight between Brazzaville, the capital of the Congo, and Paris on December 31, 2020. Shortly after takeoff, the pilots noticed that they were short of 1.4 tons of fuel, and later -25 minutes They began a fuel release procedure after noticing that the fuel levels had dropped further, but stopped at the point where one of the engines stopped working.

The pilots discussed the possibility of shutting down the engine several times, but the BEA found that "the captain's tendency to speak first ... was not helpful for the co-pilots to express their opinions and doubts."

The decision not to shut down the engine in flight was presented in the report as a "significant fire hazard."

In another incident at the airline, in September 2020, the pilots of an Airbus A319 "partially ignored operational procedures" so that they could make a quick but unclear approach to land at Orly Airport in Paris.

The Air France pilots' union recently warned that its members were suffering from "chronic fatigue" and depression.

The union also claimed that Air France Group Chief Executive Benjamin Smith is striving to meet the company's profit targets, despite warnings that flight safety could be compromised as a result.
