In the past year, we have presented here quite a few health trends that started on Tiktok - some of them are dangerous like the avocado preservation trend, while others are not really effective or helpful but are also harmless.

A new video that has gone viral belongs to the second group and it mainly involves eating carrots.

Why?

to relieve menstrual cramps.



Menstrual cramps usually start when bleeding starts, and they last 48 to 72 hours on average.

They are often characterized by spasms and severe abdominal pain, back pain, nausea (accompanied by constipation or diarrhea), headaches and a general unwell feeling.

Sometimes the pain is even accompanied by great weakness, dizziness and depression.

And although the contractions are often the worst when the bleeding is at its peak, they can occur in unpleasant attacks several days before the period begins - and this is where the carrot comes in.

Tictoker Virginia Gerhler has been promoting the benefits of eating carrots a week before her period for some time.

In a viral video she posted, Gerhler — who describes herself as a hormone and holistic health coach — told her followers that the trick made her period pain "much more bearable."

Indeed, the businesswoman has taken this method one step further, saying she now makes sure to eat a carrot every day to ensure she has a lighter period.

The video catapulted Growler into the 'Healthtok' Hall of Fame after racking up more than 924,000 views.



In the clip, she explains how she came across a video of advice on how to relieve period pain, before deciding to try it herself.

Gerhler then claims that eating a raw carrot a week before your period helps "clean up excess estrogen."

"Food is medicine," reads the caption of the clip, next to a fire emoji.

So how, if at all, does it work?

Period pains are caused by contractions of the uterus and excess production of the hormone prostaglandin which increases the levels of inflammation in the body and the levels of pain.

A diet low in nutrients, allergies to certain foods, lack of physical activity, stress or a problem with hormonal balance - may increase the pain.



It has been shown that a good supply of magnesium can help relax muscles and thus relieve cramps, while vitamin K can help prevent excess bleeding - both of which are found in carrots and may be the reason for the success demonstrated by the Tiktokari.

Calcium also has a similar effect to magnesium, and a diet rich in leafy greens, such as spinach and kale, should increase levels of both.

They also act as diuretics and thus help relieve bloating.
