Lack of workers, strikes and general aviation chaos are forcing more airlines to cancel their flights this winter.

The result: thousands of passengers across Europe are expected to be affected by this.

The Euronews website reports on what is currently known about the flight cancellations from now until March 2023.

Lufthansa: cancellations until March

German airline Lufthansa confirmed this week that it will cancel several flights from its winter schedule between now and March 26, 2023. So far, the airline has not announced the number of flights that will be canceled, but it claims that these cancellations are due to a shortage of personnel, particularly at Frankfurt Airport.

Lufthansa may also make several changes to the flight times on the various routes, starting in October.

British Airways: Eight percent of flights will be cancelled

British Airways announced that it is canceling more than 1,000 flights before October 29, due to the extension of the restrictions on the passenger quota that can pass through Heathrow International Airport in London, as we published at the time in Walla!

The cap was announced in July, limiting the number of passengers each day to 100,000 in order to prevent last-minute cancellations.

In addition, another 10,000 flights will also be dropped from the British airline's schedule between October 29 and March next year.

This is eight percent of the number of company flights in that period.

Scandinavian Airlines: Because of the big strike

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), which has filed for bankruptcy, has canceled 1,600 flights from its planned flight schedule for the months of September and October.

The company claims that this action is part of the cumulative effect of its pilots' strike last July, as well as delays in the delivery of new aircraft.

Wiz Air: Damage to vacation destinations

Israel is less affected at the moment, but we may also be affected by it: the Hungarian low-cost airline is canceling almost all of its flights from Cardiff airport in Wales from September for more than six months.

The result will be damage to lines that visit popular holiday destinations in Europe, including Alicante in Spain, the Greek island of Corfu and Lanzarote in the Canary Islands.

And this is only a partial list.

The company stated that the reason stems from what was defined as "economic pressures".

American Airlines: Tens of thousands of canceled flights

The American company plans to cancel more than 29,000 flights in the month of November, in an effort to reduce aviation chaos.

The frequency of some of the company's fixed lines is being reduced, while others are being completely eliminated.

Delta Airlines: Unexpected shortage of workers

Delta Airlines, which launched a line from Tel Aviv to Boston in May of this year, is also cutting back on its flights.

This November, more than 4,000 flights are expected to be canceled due to a manpower shortage, caused by an unexpected number of workers who declared sick leave.

Rainier: surprisingly good

These flight cancellations are happening despite the fact that an increasing number of people are looking to fly for vacations after the pandemic.

Thus, very high demand along with a lack of staff led to most of the delays, cancellations and long queues experienced by the industry this summer.

However, one airline is taking advantage of these cancellations and increasing the number of flights: Irish low-cost carrier Rainier has just added more than a million seats to its winter flight schedule.

This number refers to flights visiting Great Britain alone.

"While British Airways is canceling eight percent of its winter schedule due to crew shortages and capacity constraints at Heathrow, Ryanair is now adding more seats for the winter period, in our biggest number to date," said the company's chief executive Michael O'Leary in a statement. -According to the publication, the company's target for the coming year grew from 165 million to 166.5 million passengers.
