A Saudi woman was sentenced to
45 years in prison
for her social media posts, just weeks after a similar sentence imposed on a fellow University of Leeds PhD student: 34 years for spreading dissident tweets.
This was announced by the human rights NGO Democracy for the Arab World Now (Dawn), a Washington-based group founded by the murdered journalist
Khashoggi
, who shared a copy of the court document.
Nourah al-Qahtani received the sentence on appeal after being convicted of "using the Internet to tear apart the social fabric" and "violating public order".
