Under the title “Transformation in Teaching and Learning English During and After the Covid-19 Pandemic,” the Higher Institute of Languages ​​at the University of Damascus held today its eleventh international conference for teaching English to non-native speakers, after a hiatus of more than twelve years.

Dr. Maysa Al-Seyoufi, Vice President of Damascus University for Scientific Affairs, pointed out that the conference confirms the importance that Damascus University attaches to teaching living languages ​​to its students and scientific cadres, indicating that the conference aims to study the possibility of distance learning and to know the extent of its use at different times and whether a form of hybrid learning can be reached. Between traditional and digital, and the possibility of adding a third form, such as linking and networking, in interactive lectures with other universities.

Dr. Al-Seyoufi noted the important role played by the Higher Institute of Languages ​​in studying the distance learning experience that was applied during the Corona pandemic, analyzing it and drawing conclusions that can be used to develop the traditional teaching methods currently used.

In turn, Dr. Ali Al-Lahham, Dean of the Institute, pointed out the importance of resuming the conference after a break of more than twelve years and in light of the great changes witnessed by education in general and teaching English in particular, and the changes during the spread of the Corona pandemic, stressing that the conference will contribute effectively to the promotion of foreign and Arabic languages ​​at the University Damascus and supplying learners and teachers with all that is new in this context.

Al-Lahham explained that the themes of the conference focused on teaching English through the Internet, the challenges resulting from this, the educational measures taken during the pandemic, the changing roles of English language teachers and learners, in addition to the role of social media in teaching and learning the language.

For his part, Dr. Ghiath Barakat, professor in the Department of English at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at Damascus University and the Higher Institute of Languages, pointed out that the conference is an indication that Damascus University, with its distinguished cadres, continues to keep pace with everything new in science, which contributes to advancing the education process in general and teaching living languages ​​and in In particular, the English language is for the better.

The convening of this conference comes in light of global preparations for the Education Transformation Summit, which will be held next September in New York on the sidelines of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly in response to the global crisis in education and transforming it in light of crises and epidemics to work on planting the seeds for transforming education in a rapidly changing world. .
