The national dish of the Greeks is a soup!
Funny, is not it?
What we interpret as typical Greek dishes and order up and down in our favorite tavern around the corner is not that one Greek dish after all.
Fasolada – a creamy bean stew – is to Greece what sauerkraut is to Germans and Wiener Schnitzel to Austrians.
But why not gyros?
I have my own (and not scientifically proven) theory: for a dish to become a “national dish”, it must be seen as such by the nation itself and eaten by the majority of the population.
On the other hand, other countries must also associate this dish with this nation.
For people who do not come from Greece, the delicious street food gyros, which is known all over the world, wins the race.
However, the Greeks see things differently.
This could also be due to the fact that bean soup has been affordable in all social classes for centuries - in contrast to meat for gyros.
What do you think?
But it doesn't matter whether it's bifteki, gyros or tsatsiki - Greek cuisine simply tastes good!
Think outside the box and try our recipe for a Greek bean soup.
That's how it's done:
You need these ingredients:
2 tbsp olive oil
100 g onions, diced
4 sticks of celery, diced
2 carrots, sliced
2 garlic cloves, chopped
1 tsp salt
0.5 tsp pepper
2 tbsp flour
500 g canned white beans, drained
600 ml vegetable broth
20 g parsley leaves
0.5 lemon, grated and squeezed
dill (optional)
The preparation is simple:
Heat olive oil in a saucepan and sauté onions, carrots, celery and garlic.
Season with salt and pepper.
Sprinkle flour on top and fry briefly.
Add drained beans and deglaze with vegetable broth.
Stir well so that no lumps form.
Bring to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 10 minutes over low heat.
Stir occasionally.
Add the parsley, lemon zest and juice.
Let stew simmer until desired consistency.
Serve with dill if you like.
Relish!
