Venice 79, the program of 2 September: Guadagnino in the race

The first of the five Italians in competition, Luca Guadagnino with

, arrives on 2 September at the Venice International Film Festival.

The director returns to direct Timothée Chalamet, for a love story of young cannibals in provincial Reagan America.

Also competing are

by Romain Gavras, on a family war that becomes a social conflict, and

by the documentary master Frederick Wiseman who here tells the relationship between Leo Tolstoy and his wife, Sofia.

In the Horizons section, return to the Show by Isabelle Huppert in

by Jean-Paul Salomé on the true story of Maureen Kearney, union representative of the nuclear power plant of a French multinational.

Among the protagonists also Abel Ferrara, in competition at the Giornate degli Autori with

interpreted by Shia Labeouf.

, a comedy, co-produced by the Manetti Bros, about a young provincial punk band that puts in place a plan to launch its own career.

It tells of the long relationship between Leo Tolstoy and his wife, Sofia.

Married for 36 years, they had 13 children, nine of whom survived.

They were also a problematic couple, very dissatisfied with each other, although they enjoyed intense moments of reconciliation from time to time.

BONES AND ALL

by Luca Guadagnino (Venice 79) with Taylor Russell, Timothée Chalamet, Mark Rylance, André Holland (Sala Grande at 7pm).

First love blossoms between Maren, a girl who is learning to survive on the fringes of society, and Lee, a wanderer with deep feelings.

The two meet and embark on a thousand mile long odyssey in Ronald Reagan's America.

ATHENA

by Romain Gavras (Venice 79) with Dali Benssalah, Sami Slimane, Anthony Bajon, Ouassini Embarek, Alexis Manenti (Sala Grande at 9.45pm).

After the death of his younger brother in an alleged confrontation with the police, Abdel is called home from the front line and finds his devastated family.

Trapped between his younger brother Karim's desire for revenge and his older brother Moktar's criminal affairs, he tries to calm tensions.

LA SYNDICALISTE

by Jean-Paul Salomé (Orizzonti) with Isabelle Huppert, Grégory Gadebois, François-Xavier Demaison, Alexandra Maria Lara (Sala Darsena at 5pm).

It is the true story of Maureen Kearney, union representative of the nuclear power plant of a French multinational, who became an informant, denouncing top-secret deals that rocked the French nuclear sector.

It is the end of the First World War and the young Italian soldiers return to San Giovanni Rotondo, a poor, violent land, over which the church and the wealthy landowners exercise undisputed dominion.

Padre Pio also arrives, in a remote Capuchin convent, to begin his ministry, evoking a charismatic aura.

MARGINI

by Niccolò Falsetti (Critics' Week), with Francesco Turbanti, Emanuele Linfatti, Matteo Creatini, Valentina Carnelutti (Sala Perla at 2 pm).

Late summer 2008.

Edoardo, Iacopo and Michele are the members of a punk group from Grosseto.

They finally have the opportunity to go to Bologna to open the concert of a famous American hardcore band but on the day of departure the concert is canceled.

The three, however, do not give up.
