The series »The Rings of Power« has given the streaming provider Amazon Prime Video a viewer record.

On the first day, more than 25 million people worldwide watched the fantasy epic from the "Lord of the Rings" universe by JRR Tolkien, the US company announced late Saturday evening.

This is a record debut for a series on Prime Video.

The first season, which cost $465 million to produce, premiered on Friday.

Amazon plans to air a total of five seasons.

The first eight-episode season will run through October 14.

It's the most expensive TV show in history.

The Rings of Power series is set thousands of years before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings stories.

Season one was filmed in New Zealand, where director Peter Jackson shot his Oscar-winning trilogy.

Season two will be produced in the UK.
