Parents of newborns can now apply for child benefit digitally for the first time.

On the other hand, there is more money for all parents.

From January 1, 2023, the transfer payment will increase to 227 euros.

Munich ‒ This should please all parents in view of the constantly rising costs for energy, food and housing: Child benefit is increasing.

In concrete terms, this means that the federal transfer payment will be increased by eight euros from the current 219 to 227 euros per child from January 1, 2023.

Parents of newborns can now even submit the benefit online on the Elster portal – the digital tax office, so to speak.

So far, parents have been able to fill out child benefit applications online.

However, you then had to print it out, sign it and submit it.

This effort is now eliminated.

Child benefit for parents of newborns: online application with Elster

First, the application is made on the website of the Federal Employment Agency under the menu item "Child benefit application at birth".

Parents must then answer the question "

Would you like to apply for child benefit for your biological, newborn child?*"

with YES.

Only then will the legal guardians be offered the option to submit the form with Elster on the next screen.

Alternatively, mums and dads can of course continue without Elster, print out the application, sign it and then submit it to the family benefits office.

Anyone who decides to go digital is forwarded from the employment agency to the Elster portal, where they have to identify themselves in a few steps and choose the most user-friendly method - the "mobile login".

It automatically leads to the Elster smart app.

With their help, the application can then be sent to the responsible financial office without a signature.

However, an active, one-time Elster account is required.

Apply for child benefit: Money is also possible for children up to 25 years of age

Mothers and fathers also receive child benefit for children up to the age of 18.

Some also receive substantial help for their offspring until they are 25 years old.

The amount of money depends on how many children parents have.

This also applies if one of the children does not live in their own household: In addition, parents are entitled to more child benefit from the third child onwards - even if their siblings live with the other parent.

Parents who would like to submit an application for children over the age of 18 cannot currently avoid first printing out the form and then submitting it to the health insurance fund in the same way.

The digital way as for parents of newborns is therefore still not possible.

Incidentally, those in need in Munich can also count on more money.

These include people with low incomes who can no longer afford the expensive plaster.

The city council has now decided this and wants to implement concrete measures.

From now on, pensioners have the opportunity to eat lunch free of charge or at a reduced price in service centers.
