It is the place where Queen Elizabeth chose to stay as her health conditions plummeted, until her death on 8 September.

Balmoral Castle in Scotland has always been the place of heart and serenity for the sovereign, who loved spending the summer here.

The residence has a long tradition that dates back to Queen Victoria and Prince Consort Albert: in 1848 they spent the summer there and were immediately impressed by the isolated abode in Aberdeenshire, which they decided to expand, with the works started in 1853 up to the current building, in the center of an estate of 20,000 hectares.

There Elizabeth always found comfort, in what was very often the meeting place of the Windsors, even in the most difficult years for the crown, such as in the period from the separation between Charles and Diana until the latter's death in 1997. And the queen spent unforgettable moments with her husband Philip at her side and the rest of the family who joined them during the summer.

It is no coincidence that with Philip's death, in April 2021, official images of the two were released together in the Scottish residence.

Elizabeth II was the queen of records - Lifestyle

Elizabeth II is the queen of records: only Louis XIV, the Sun King, remained on the throne longer than her.

Since 6 February 1952, the date of the sudden death of her father, George VI, the Queen of England has reigned for 70 years and 214 days.

In all, there are 25,782 days.

Surely one of the places most dear to the sovereign in the mansion is the living room where she proudly keeps the images of her large family, as revealed in a shot of 2013. In recent months, after moving from Buckingham Palace to Windsor Castle, Elizabeth has spent a lot of time in Balmoral, even in June for a short break before attending the highlight popular celebrations of its Platinum Jubilee.

And here you have chosen to remain in recent days despite the commitment of having to preside over the handover of the British Prime Minister, from Boris Johnson to Liz Truss.

For the first time in its history, the residence became the seat of this fundamental institutional moment for the United Kingdom.

It is paradoxical that the castle at the center of world media attention was found in the heart of turbulent Scotland, animated for centuries by independentist impulses and also in recent times, with the First Minister Nicola Sturgeon who relaunched the campaign for the secession from the Kingdom.
