The 30-year-old attacked several passers-by "with at least a knife" near the station of Ansbach, a town in Bavaria not far from Nuremberg, according to a statement by the local police.
Two people were injured but are not life threatening, according to the same source.
During the police intervention, the attacker "attacked the agents", who opened fire and fatally wounded him.
According to witnesses, "the man also shouted 'Allahakbar' several times", the police specify, stating that they are investigating to find out "whether what happened has a link with an Islamist or terrorist context".
