Strike at France Télévisions this Monday: possible disruptions to be expected on France 3

France Télévisions employees are called to stop work this Monday to protest against the announced disappearance of national editions

Social tensions to be expected this Monday within France Télévisions.

The employees of the Parisian headquarters of the public company are called to strike by several organizations representing the staff (SNJ, CGT, Unsa, CGC).

The reason for the grumbling: "Tempo", named after the project to reorganize France 3's information supply announced by Delphine Ernotte in early July.

Why a strike against “Tempo”?

The trade unions are opposed to the main measure of this reform: the announced disappearance of the national newspapers of La Trois.

The "12/13" and the "19/20" should be replaced by 24 regional editions called "Ici noon" and "Ici evening".

According to management, these sections of information will continue to deal with national and international news but through a “local prism”.

“Tempo” is thus presented as an additional step in the regionalization of the France 3 offer, supposed to better distinguish it from that of France 2 and France Info.

Since 2019, France Télévisions has already launched co-broadcasting on the Trois des matinales of France Bleu, then increased by 20 minutes in 2021 the evening slots devoted to local news.

Not enough to calm the “concern” or even the “stunned” employees of the national editorial staff of the public group France, or “nearly 1,000 people”, according to Pierre Mouchel.

"For us, it's quite simply a savings plan", estimates the representative of the CGT, worrying about the future reclassifications in regions of personnel who worked until then at the headquarters for the "12/13" and the " 19/20”.

"It's a false regionalization", criticizes Serge Cimino, of the SNJ, stressing that the "Tempo" project provides that "the national and international contents" of the new "Ici midi" and "Ici soir" are produced by France Info, and “national editorial services”.

We have done more local according to the trade unionist, who also underlines the attachment of viewers to the national news of La Trois, the first of which, the "Soir 3", has already disappeared in 2019.

What impact on the antenna on Monday?

Limited a priori to the national editions of France 3, it is difficult to evaluate for the moment.

"Things will be decided tomorrow morning", slips us a house journalist, for whom the work around the death of Elizabeth II does not facilitate visibility.

In any case, the unions want to believe in a strong mobilization which could disrupt the dissemination of "12/13" and "19/20", presented respectively on Monday by David Boéri and Carole Gaessler.

"The chain will find ways to circumvent the movement", however warns Serge Cimino.

The regional antennas of France 3 not participating in the call to the strike, the national antenna will be able to draw there reports to be diffused in the form of all-in-images.

It also remains to be seen what the repercussion will be on the side of the employees of France 2. In a press release published on Saturday, the society of journalists of La Deux (SDJ) expressed "its deepest concerns vis-à-vis" "Tempo" and its “doubts” concerning “its editorial interest, its social consequences” and “its feasibility within the time allowed”.

"Everyone is obviously free to take part, or not, in this strike movement," she said.

What are the next steps ?

Aware of the sensitivity of the reform, the information management of France Télévisions intends to begin a long phase of consultation with the staff representatives.

Dedicated to co-construct the project, it should in theory last until July 2023. In early September, France Télévisions appointed Sophie Guillin, former director of the France Info channel, to coordinate the project.

She will be supported by Julien Duperray, representative of the national editorial staff, and Anne-Sophie Maxime, from the regional branches.

Problem for the direction, the trade unions condition their participation in these discussions with the preliminary withdrawal of the suppression of the national newspapers.

“We are being asked for the moment to write a project whose end we already know,” quips Serge Cimino.

“The management must withdraw the ax from the end of national editions”, abounds Pierre Mouchel of the CGT, who specifies that he is not opposed to a reflection on “the overhaul of the information of France 3”.

In the meantime, the unions should meet Delphine Ernotte on September 20.

“Tomorrow's strike

(Monday)

is not a last stand.

It's a first stone, ”warns Serge Cimino, for whom a rebound in the movement in the regions is to be expected in the coming weeks.

“We are going to launch a social guerrilla war.
