TV drama »Succession«, about the intrigues of a media dynasty, has won Best Drama Series of the Year at the Emmy Awards in Los Angeles.
Screenwriter Jesse Armstrong and supporting actor Matthew Macfadyen (in the role of Tom Wambsgans) were also recognized at the gala for their performances.
In many other important categories, the 25-time nominated series, which is loosely based on the globally influential Murdoch clan, had to admit defeat.
As in the previous year, »Ted Lasso« received the award for best comedy series.
Director MJ Delaney, leading actor Jason Sudeikis and supporting actor Brett Goldstein also received the most important television award in the world for their work on the football series.
The series running on Apple TV+ tells the story of a US football coach who is tasked with saving a football team in the UK.
The Emmys were awarded for the 74th time this year.
Comedian Kenan Thompson – best known from “Saturday Night Live” – moderated the gala in Los Angeles.
One of the first prizes of the evening went to actor Michael Keaton.
The 71-year-old won the award for best actor in a miniseries for his role in the pharmaceutical drama »Dopesick«.
Murray Bartlett won Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries for playing the hotel manager in the satire White Lotus.
Not only Macfadyen, but also Julia Garner (»Ozark«) was honored for the best supporting role in a drama series.
In addition to »Succession«, the Netflix world success »Squid Game« and the office satire »Severance« were also considered promising in the run-up.
In the comedy categories, the 20-time nominated football series »Ted Lasso« and the school comedy »Abbott Elementary« were considered favourites.
The team from the luxury holiday satire »White Lotus«, which has also been nominated 20 times, hoped for many awards in the mini-series.
The Emmys are awarded in more than 110 categories by around 20,000 members of the Television Academy.
At the gala in the Microsoft Theater, the focus is on the main categories;
Dozens of awards in sub-categories were already presented last weekend.
