For a long time, when Anglo-American musicians talked about influences from German music, they mainly expressed admiration for Kraftwerk or cloudy references to Krautrock, »something like Can or Neu!«.
But the hype cycles continue to develop, and now the 26-year-old Californian singer Doja Cat has come out as a fan of German rave music.
In CR Fashion Book , a twice-yearly magazine by former Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld, Doja Cat was asked what the next album she is working on would sound like.
The singer, known for her pop hits "Say So" and "Kiss Me More," replied that she's really into "that German rave vibe from the 90's," which she enjoys a lot.
She loved these things as a child, said Doja Cat and is looking forward to being able to live out this enthusiasm now.
"Of course I couldn't shave my hair back then, wear a fur bra and have my navel pierced." That gives a clue to the album.
Interestingly, the musician, born Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, says she's aware it's quite a trend at the moment.
It may allude to recent albums by Drake and Beyoncé, both of which were inspired by '90s dance music.
However, Doja Cat emphasizes that she is about "rave culture, not house".
Let's see if she ever says there's always been a Marusha element in her music.
Designer Matthew M. Williams conducted the interview with Doja Cat for the fashion magazine.
The singer wore a Givenchy dress he designed to the European MTV Awards.
As for her relationship with fashion, she says she's loved dressing up since she was a child.
She also liked to paint her face back then.
