 Third dose vaccination against Covid-19 has no negative effects on male fertility;

on the contrary, contracting the infection involves a reduction in the number of spermatozoa and a worsening of their characteristics which can last for weeks or months after recovery.

This is the alarm coming from a research project (EcoFoodFertility) presented at the congress of the Italian Society of Andrology (Sia) underway in Bergamo.

"The project started from the 'land of fires', now extended to various areas not only in Italy, has several lines of research that also involve the effects of the vaccine and Covid-19 on male fertility", explains Luigi Montano, project coordinator and president of the Italian Society of Human Reproduction.

The study considered two groups.

The first, made up of 75 men under the age of 35 followed over time for couple infertility problems and whose parameters were assessed before and after contracting Covid.

"In those who had mild symptoms of the infection, the sperm count remained substantially unchanged, but the mobility and especially the vitality of the spermatozoa decreased", explains Maria Cira Gentile, author of the study.

The consequences for those who have had a more severe form are more serious.

In this case "mobility and vitality of the spermatozoa decrease by 20% with a damage of 80% of the spermatic DNA, to which is also added a reduction of 41% in the number of spermatozoa", adds the president Sia Alessandro Palmieri.

In contrast, tests performed after vaccination did not raise cause for concern.

In this case, the research analyzed the semen parameters of 114 volunteers between the ages of 22 and 31 10-15 days before the third dose of the vaccine and 32-39 days later without finding particular differences between before and after.

"The vaccine turned out to be safe," says Palmieri.

"In 96.5% of cases, a slight increase in the concentration of spermatozoa and their motility was observed, while only 3.5% showed a worsening in seminal parameters, which however returned fully to normal after 75-80 days from vaccination in almost all the samples analyzed ", concludes the specialist.
