When a rowing boat capsized on the Weser in Bremen, an 89-year-old died.
As the police in the Hanseatic city announced, the man was on the river on Wednesday with a 73-year-old.
The boat of the two rowers got out of control for reasons that are still unclear and overturned.
Only the 73-year-old was then able to save himself on the shore.
According to the police, a patrol car crew discovered the 89-year-old floating in the water during the following operation.
A sports boat driver brought the casualty ashore and started resuscitation measures.
An emergency doctor could then only determine his death.
The police are now investigating the exact circumstances of the accident.
However, there was no evidence of third-party negligence.
According to the fire brigade, the accident occurred near the so-called Weser weir in the city area.
After the emergency call, units of the fire brigade, the German Life Saving Society and a rescue helicopter were dispatched.
A lifeboat manned by firefighters also happened to be nearby on a practice run and only a few minutes after the alarm was raised.
