Another obstacle on the way to shortening shifts:
Finance Minister Avigdor Lieberman in a scathing letter attacked Economy Minister Orna Barbiei who called for any department or hospital director who wishes to be able to shorten interns' shifts, even at the center.
This was preceded by Prime Minister Lapid's statement that he would immediately act to shorten the shifts to 16 hours, which Lieberman also attacked: "This is electoral spin before the elections."
In his letter, Lieberman calls on Barbibai to return to the original outline which dealt with shortening the shifts in 10 hospitals in the periphery in the first phase.
Lieberman also claims in his letter that the NIS 66 million budget for the move is "available and ready" but does not commit to transferring it.

"I was amazed to read your appeal to all hospitals, including in the center of the country, to prepare for the immediate implementation of shortening the shifts of the interns," Lieberman wrote to Barbibai.

Will they damage the periphery?

"It is clear that any intern who is faced with the possibility of short duty in Tel Aviv or Ramat Gan will never choose to go to a hospital in Safed or Nahariya. Furthermore, it is clear that strong hospitals located in the center of the country will be able to prepare faster than those 10 hospitals in the periphery that we agreed on in the original outline. The result of the above-mentioned step will further deepen the disparities and result in fatal damage to the medical system in the periphery."
