Seine-Maritime, Calvados, Somme... Ile-de-France residents are increasingly going on vacation to the North

Le Parisien sketches the portrait of the holidays spent by Ile-de-France residents this summer, based on data from SFR Geostatistics. They confirm

What if, in the future, Ile-de-France residents abandon the Var to enjoy their holidays in Seine-Maritime?

Figures from SFR Geostatistics, which Le Parisien reveals, show in this summer of 2022 a trend – timid but clear – for the inhabitants of Île-de-France to abandon the south of France in favor of the North.

The operator used the location data of its customers (anonymized and rectified in order to cover the entire population) to analyze the main holiday resorts of Ile-de-France residents in metropolitan France.

“People are trying to escape the city centers where it is hot.

The tourist offices, on the ground, see more and more people who come because they are too hot elsewhere”, notes with the Parisian Xavier Prévotat, the director of Seine-Maritime Attractiveness, who notes a trend which is observed “ for 5 to 10 years.

According to figures from the operator SFR, this department gained 30,000 more weekly visitors this summer compared to 2019, placing it in 30th place among the departments most visited by residents in Île-de-France (compared to 84th it three years ago).

Developments with climate change

The data from SFR Geostatistics therefore shows a craze for the departments of northern France.

In addition to Seine-Maritime, Calvados, Nord, Pas-de-Calais and Somme register between 8,000 and just over 10,000 more tourists from Île-de-France each week, compared to 2019 The Manche, Eure and Orne, among others, are also seeing their attendance by Ile-de-France residents increase this summer.

“Climate change can have consequences on tourist attendance in certain territories or certain types of accommodation”, predicted INSEE in a study published in August and devoted to territories in the face of global warming.

"Since 2011, tourist overnight stays in outdoor accommodation have increased more strongly in the coastal departments north of Vendée than in the Mediterranean departments", also noted the statistical institute.

The Var, eternal destination number 1

But this trend is still far from upsetting the table of destinations favored by the inhabitants of the Ile-de-France region.

The Var department was again this summer the most visited by Ile-de-France residents.

On average, between July 11 and August 21, 2022, more than 140,000 of them were present each week in the Mediterranean department.

The second most popular destination is on the Atlantic coast: this is Charente-Maritime (with La Rochelle, which has become a destination of choice for Ile-de-France residents), where more than 100,000 of them average were there each week over the same period.

Compared to a comparable period in 2019 (from July 15 to August 25, 2019), the ranking of 2022 destinations for Ile-de-France residents is only slightly upset.

In addition to Var and Charente-Maritime, Vendée, Hérault and Gironde complete the top 5. Around 90,000 Ile-de-France residents visited these three departments each week during the summer.

Then come Bouches-du-Rhône (+1 place) and Morbihan (- 1 place), with more than 80,000 visitors from Île-de-France.

Conversely, some register fewer Ile-de-France residents than they normally do (workers for example).

This is the case of Oise, Nord, Eure-et-Loir, Aisne, Marne or Eure.

Here is a non-exhaustive list of other regions that attract Ile-de-France residents on holiday: Ariège, Vosges, Mayenne, Loiret, Bas-Rhin and even Moselle... Few surprises: no access to the sea, these departments have few advantages in summer, from a tourist point of view.
