Behind the intro of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is the studio

Plains of Yonder

, which provides a detailed explanation of what the opening credits of The Rings of Power are all about:

The previous series is set thousands of years before The Hobbit - a time when Sauron ruled, dragons flew and proto-hobbits roamed.

We set out to depict a universe that is both primal and timeless.

We took inspiration from JRR Tolkien's Ainur, immortal angelic beings singing music so beautiful that the world is created from their sound, and designed a main title sequence built from the world of sound.

Furthermore, the statement mentions the so-called cymatics, which as a natural phenomenon makes the sound of the music visible to the eye.

For example, the vibrations of fine particles on a flat surface show striking symmetrical patterns that reflect sound frequencies that would be perceived as magical.

The website goes on to say that the opening credits summon an ancient and invisible force fighting to be seen.

This is how symbols arise, flow, and disappear.

The soundscapes are designed to create fleeting visions of conflict and harmony that move in step with Howard Shores' theme music.
