Director Wim Wenders is awarded the Praemium Imperiale culture prize.

This year's winners also include Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, Italian painter Giulio Paolini, Polish pianist Krystian Zimerman and Japanese architecture firm SANAA.

The organizers announced this on Thursday.

The Praemium Imperiale is awarded annually by the Japan Art Association.

The award is endowed with 15 million yen each, the equivalent of around 110,000 euros.

It has been awarded since 1989 at the suggestion of the Japanese imperial family in memory of Prince Takamatsu (1905-1987).

The jury described Wim Wenders as »one of the most important representatives of contemporary cinema«.

In addition to feature films such as »Paris Texas« or »Der Himmel über Berlin« and documentaries such as »Buena Vista Social Club« or »Pina«, the awardees also emphasize the work of the Wim Wenders Foundation.

Among other things, it supports young filmmakers in the realization of innovative narrative forms.

He is currently working on a film with the design project »The Tokyo Toilet«.

The Praemium Imperiale recognizes artists for their international impact and their role in enriching the global community.

The Nobel Prizes are a role model.
