O'Zapft is: The book tips for the Oktoberfest

The Munich Oktoberfest, also known as Wiesn, is considered the largest folk festival in the world: two lively weeks with beer, chicken, fairground rides and partying people from all over the world.

But like last year, this year's festival was canceled due to a pandemic.

Sad news for the worldwide fan community.

For 35 years, the Munich photographer Volker Derlath has hardly missed a day at the Oktoberfest.

With his camera he is in the middle of the action and captures intimate moments, touching scenes, moments full of violence and comedy.

The "folk festival of all folk festivals" reminds him of the Middle Ages with its incomparable coarseness of popular entertainment, he says.

The Wiesn is a kind of utopia in which visitors can live out what has long been domesticated in everyday life and swept under the carpet of civilization.

Bruno Jonas "Instructions for use for the Munich Oktoberfest"

The Munich Oktoberfest is a major event of a special kind: every autumn, six million people from all over the world travel to a concrete area, the »Wiesn«, to eat, celebrate, and flirt with typical Bavarian meals and drinks at inflated prices in a confined space, to fight - in short: to enjoy a few hours of happiness.

Bruno Jonas illuminates the dimensions of this event - from the peculiarities of the MVV to the search for a seat in the beer tent, the celebrity box and amateur conducting, from the complete costume set to the "Italian weekend".

The dialectic of Bavarian nature is discussed, as are various states of intoxication and the Wiesn as a symbol of eternity.
