Iris Cole interviews Dr. Amnon Musk about headaches and migraines (Walla system)
Headaches are almost a daily thing for many of us, one that affects our functioning and quality of life, and yet - many of us don't know enough about them.
Dr. Amnon Mosk, director of the headache and physical empowerment clinic in Ichilov's neurological system, was a guest on the "Expert Clinic" podcast to explain what causes headaches, the difference between them and migraines, and how to deal with them.
"Headaches are a major problem for humans" , said Dr. Musk, "A few years ago, a study by the World Health Organization came out, which looked at the burden of diseases on humans, and it turns out that the main diseases that cause the most suffering and functional impairment are back pain and migraines, more than cancer, diabetes, blood pressure and joint problems And it's not for nothing, headaches are a very common thing, it's a serious problem that causes a lot of suffering, there's no doubt that it's a very serious problem."
"Most people treat a headache as if 'everyone has it, take something and it will go away,' but this is a real and difficult problem that causes a lot of harm," said Dr. Musk, "There are several types of headaches, there are migraines and there are many other pains - and for everyone There is another treatment, and everyone should be given their own diagnosis and treatment." In any case, if the headache repeats itself a lot, it is important to check what it is, and not neglect it. "There are good treatments today, and there is no need to suffer," said Dr. Musk.
How do you know if it's a migraine?
"A migraine is a severe pain, it can be unilateral, in the temple or in the forehead, the pressure is so strong, you can feel the pain like a throbbing," explained Dr. Musk, "the pain causes a great deal of suffering and significant functional impairment, it is impossible to function." He added that in a migraine "there is an activity of the brain, which is manifested in the fact that light is very disturbing, sounds, smells, even a painful and disturbing touch, nausea - people can vomit."

Migraine is actually a process of acute inflammation around the blood vessels.
"Chemical inflammation caused by nerve activity of the brain, and the treatment of migraine is treatment of inflammation," explained Dr. Musk. Migraine can attack anyone, no one is immune to it, but it attacks between 10 and 15 percent of women, and about 8 to 10 percent of men. "There are 900,000 people in Israel who suffer from migraines, and every day there are 40,000 migraine attacks," he added.
What causes a migraine attack?
There are several factors that can intensify a migraine, such as the menstrual cycle in women, excess sleep or lack of sleep, sometimes also stress, some people suffer from travel and this can ignite a migraine in them.
But, contrary to popular belief, "food does not cause migraines," said Dr. Musk.
It's not their fault.

"People say in some cases that there is a connection between food and migraine, especially chocolate, yellow cheese, red wine, but the reality shows something else - food almost does not cause migraine. There are specific people who have a sensitivity to a certain food, and then they know it and can avoid it, But with most people the story is completely different," explained Dr. Musk.
So why does chocolate still have such a bad name among migraine sufferers? Part of the inflammation of migraine is related to the neurotransmitter serotonin - there is a sharp decrease in it. "One of the ways to increase serotonin in the body It is by eating a sweet, many times people unconsciously feel a drop in serotonin and then eat a sweet, and when its effect decreases - the migraine comes." Dr. Musk clarified that the recommendation today is not to do special diets for migraine, unless there is a specific sensitivity.
