(ANSA) - ROME, SEPTEMBER 16 - The Iranian Supreme Guide Ayatollah Ali Khamenei underwent surgery last week for an intestinal obstruction, after suffering severe stomach pain and high fever: now "he is better and rests".
The New York Times writes it citing four sources covered by anonymity close to the dossier.
Khamenei, 83, fell ill after visiting the shrine of Mashhad about two weeks ago, during which he would have confided to his companions that he feared that he might be the last, given his age.
Upon returning to Tehran, his conditions plummeted to become "critical".
The surgery took place in his residence, where he is now monitored 24 hours a day by a medical team.
Public appearances are currently canceled.
