Will France be represented at the Oscars in 2023?
On Thursday, September 15, the commission responsible for selecting the French film candidate for the 2023 Oscar for international feature film, composed among others of directors Michel Gondry and Jacques Audiard, met at the National Center for Cinema and Animated Image ( CNC).
Of the 33 candidate films, five - including four made by female filmmakers - were selected:
Revoir Paris
by Alice Winocour,
Un beau matin
by Mia Hansen-Love,
À Plein Temps
by Éric Gravel,
Saint Omer
by Alice Diop ,
Les Pires
by Lise Akoka and Romane Gueret.
One of them may succeed
Indochine
, by Régis Wargnier, the last French film to win the statuette in 1993.

Following a decree by Culture Minister Rima Abdul-Malak, the commission has since July been made up of seven film professionals: two exporters, two producers, two directors and a qualified personality.
The three seats reserved for representatives of institutions (Académie des César, Cannes and Unifrance) have thus been abolished.
The absence of Thierry Frémaux, general delegate of the Cannes festival, sometimes singled out to favor the films presented on the Croisette, would it be felt?
None of the films presented in the official selection this year appears on the list compiled by the commission.
The selection criteria have also been revised with an application system to be submitted, the films having to be motivated and have a distributor in the United States.
Among the 33 applications received by the CNC on September 1, five were therefore selected.
Each of the pre-selected films will have to be examined once again by the commission on Friday, September 23 during a hearing with its producer, the international seller, and, if necessary, the American distributor.
The feature film selected at the end of this second stage will be proposed to the Academy of the Oscars, which will decide, or not, to nominate it, on March 12, 2023, in Los Angeles in the category of the best international film.
As a reminder, the last French film represented in this category was
Les Miserables
by Ladj Ly in 2020.
