The failure of fertilization in Assuta: the woman to whom the fetus most likely belongs was located, but she is not pregnant Israel today

After it was discovered that a woman was carrying a fetus that was genetically incompatible with her and her partner, the hospital in Bras' Laz ruled out the possibility that during the fertilization process the couples were switched by mistake.

Miscarriage of fetuses in Assuta:

After announcing that the incident in which a woman carried an embryo that was not genetically compatible with her and her partner may be related to other patients, the Rishon Lezion Hospital said that apparently the woman to whom the embryo genetically belongs was found, but she is not pregnant.

In this way, the suspicion that during the fertilization process an exchange between the couples was mistakenly carried out is ruled out.

Assuta Rishon Lezion Hospital reported that following a careful examination, the list of patients for whom there is a likelihood of embryo exchange has been reduced from about 40 to about 10.

When only one of them has a high probability of connection with the event, and she is not pregnant.

Assuta emphasizes that "the Ministry of Health is updated on all the mapping processes and the dialogue with the patients, with full transparency as required. Also, a doctor on behalf of Assuta is in contact with the patient, whose uterus was found to be incongruent, immediately after the incident became clear and he will continue to accompany her."

Assuta notes that "all operations are carried out with sensitivity while being extremely strict about medical confidentiality. Assuta is sorry for the worry and emotional burden caused to the patients following the discovery, and is working with all its might, with all the necessary resources, in order to bring the tests to an end and create certainty and peace for all patients wherever they are."

How was the mistake discovered?

Let us remind you that such a rare malfunction can happen both in the process of pumping the egg, both in the fertilization in the laboratory and in the return of the embryos to the body.

Although at each stage the doctors and the laboratory staff are required for several verification operations, but these are the designated points for disasters.

"It's unfortunate that it happened, we have to do everything to prevent it from happening," says Prof. Shlomo Mashiach, who is known as "the father of fertility treatments in Israel."

"Such a malfunction is everyone's nightmare, fertility experts, embryologists (fertility laboratory workers, MI) and couples.

Some couples ask us questions about the identification procedure.

There are mainly religious couples who pay for 'supervision' by associations that supervise the work in the laboratory, this is another pair of eyes and it adds to their security.

I hope there won't be a big panic among the couples undergoing fertility treatments."

A procedure of tissue examination and genetic identification of the fetus is not routinely performed in fertility treatments.

Even diagnostic tests during pregnancy such as amniotic fluid or placental secretions do not provide genetic identification of the fetus, but only the picture of the chromosomes and their defects.

Experts in the field point out that the parents may have suspected something and therefore demanded such a test.

Another possibility is that an amniotic fluid test revealed a severe genetic defect that required clarification of its origin, and then it was discovered that the fetus is not genetically identical to its parents.
