Spiders, while useful, are often not wanted in the home.
With a life hack, chestnuts become a simple household remedy against the eight-legged friends.
Especially when it gets colder and wetter outside, spiders are drawn to warm indoor spaces, where they often find enough food in the form of mosquitoes or flies.
But at the latest when the cobwebs get the upper hand, you would like to get rid of the crawling animals again.
A simple trick with chestnuts offers a solution here.

Spiders are harmless beneficial creatures that play an important role in the natural cycle and devour vermin.
But they are not pretty to look at for most people.
According to the
German Nature Conservation Union
, the trembling spider and the house spider feel at home in our four walls - the latter is rather large and hairy, which has a deterrent effect.
Strong smells are said to act as a deterrent to spiders.
From a study in the
Journal of Economic Entomology
it turns out that they at least don't like the smell of chestnuts at all.
In order to drive away the eight-legged friends in a natural way,
Focus Online
has a suitable, very simple lifehack with chestnuts ready: Distribute a few chestnuts in the apartment - preferably on the window sills - and ideally crush them with a hammer beforehand so that they smell can develop better.
After a month, the chestnuts are exchanged for new ones, as they lose their scent intensity over time.
The following smells are also said to drive away spiders:
mint oil
lavender
vinegar water

They can unfold their effect in a fragrance bowl or a diffuser or if you dilute them with water in a spray bottle and spray them on window or door frames through which the animals come into the house.
Lemon oil is also often mentioned, but this shows no effect in the study mentioned above.

Another simple and environmentally friendly method is catching and carrying out the spiders with glass and paper.
