Not only Marche, the map of Italy at hydrogeological risk

At least 14 areas of Italy are most affected by extreme weather events, i.e. floods, tornadoes and heat waves. They are in the North, Center and South, with a prevalence of the Tyrrhenian coast. At least 14 areas of Italy are most affected by extreme weather events, i.e. floods, tornadoes and heat waves.

They are in the North, Center and South, with a prevalence of the Tyrrhenian coast.



The report of the Legambiente CittàClima 2021 Observatory identified them, taking into consideration the decade 2010 - 2021. From 2010 to 2021, there were 1,118 extreme weather events in the Peninsula, 133 in the last year, a 17.2% more compared to 2020. The victims were 261.

Among the most affected cities, Rome.

In ten years, 56 events have occurred: over half, 32, involved flooding following heavy rains.



Another important case is that of Bari, with 41 events, mainly flooding from intense rains (20) and damage from tornadoes (18).

There were 30 events in Milan, with at least 20 floods from the Seveso and Lambro rivers.

Among the cities, Genoa (28 events), Naples (18), Palermo (15) and Torre Annunziata (13) were also scourged.



Then there are the territories.

The Romagna coast and the north of the Marche recorded 42 cases in the period 2010-2021.



Sicily paid a heavy price: in addition to the floods in Palermo, there were 38 events on the east coast and 38 on the Agrigento coast.

In Syracuse on 11 August 2021 the European record of 48.8 degrees was reached.

In the Catania and Syracuse areas in 48 hours there was a quantity of rain equal to one third of the annual one.

Furthermore, this part of the island was the scene of devastation following the "medicane" (neologism for Mediterranean Hurricane) Apollo.



Among the other affected areas, there are the Ligurian Ponente and the province of Cuneo, with 28 cases in all, Salento, with 18 events, of which 12 cases of tornado damage, the northern Tuscan coast (17 events) , the north of Sardinia (12) and the south of the island, with 9 cases.

The most significant impacts were recorded in 602 Italian municipalities.

Specifically, there were 486 cases of flooding from intense rains, 406 cases of stops in infrastructures due to heavy rains, with 83 days of stops in subways and urban trains, 308 events with damage caused by tornadoes, 134 events caused by river floods, 48 ​​cases of damage caused by prolonged periods of drought and extreme temperatures, 41 cases of landslides caused by heavy rains and 18 cases of damage to historical heritage.
