The fire at a transformer station in Rastatt led to a widespread power outage that lasted for hours.
The fire broke out on Sunday morning for an unknown reason, a police spokesman said.
The power outage still affects the entire city area, it said at noon.
According to the warning app of the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance, the emergency numbers for the police and fire brigade are disrupted.
As a result, harmful gases escaped.
Residents should close windows and doors.
Nobody got hurt.
The extent of the damage was still unclear.
The disruption affects the entire supply network, according to Stadtwerke Rastatt.
Fire brigade helps on site
A spokesman for the Rastatt district fire brigade reported that the fire had now been extinguished, but that there was still no electricity.
The fire brigade has positioned itself in all districts of the city with vehicles to take emergency calls from the population.
All fire stations are also occupied.
The Central Baden integrated control center has been strengthened in terms of personnel.
