Even without pyrotechnics, the series about the man behind "Uber" is simply overwhelming Israel today

2022-09-19T10:07:59.609Z

In his best role yet, Joseph Gordon-Levitt manages to convey the complex psyche of Travis Kalanick • With the many moral U-turns it takes, it's hard not to want to binge-watch "The Battle for Uber"

How we like to get to know the "bastards who changed the rules" up close, the high-tech geniuses, especially those who after a while fell and were dropped by investors.

Whether it's Adam Neumann in the excellent "WECRASHED" or Elizabeth Holmes in the docu "The Inventor: Blood and Fraud in Silicon Valley", it seems that every television work about the high-tech rich that includes the title "The Rise and Fall" comes with a voyeuristic viewing recommendation.

"The Battle for Uber" (airing on HOT and NEXT) takes us in the backseat through the story of Uber entrepreneur Travis Kalanick's meteoric rise to the bitter end where he was thrown out of the venture he himself founded.

His best role so far.

Kalanick is the man behind Uber's crazy story.

A passionate entrepreneur with characteristics of the service he brought into the world: smart, revolutionary, but often ends in a dubious experience.

This is another story about a car accident caused by the greed of the grid in Silicon Valley, about those geniuses without morals, charismatic nerds by day and insecure at night - and their relationship with the managers of the companies that invest in them.

To tell the "Battle of Uber" the creators Brian Kopelman and David Wayne ("Billions") brought Quentin Tarantino to accompany the story with narration combined with exploded graphic titles.

There is no doubt that Daniela Pick's husband, as an announcer, does PR and wants to sit down in front of the series, but to tell the truth - his accompaniment often feels unnecessary and forced, a clumsy attempt to sneak the series by force. If we were already talking about Tarantino, let's also mention that his career muse, Uma Thurman, also signs a card in the series as the media woman who accompanies the story.

The "Battle of Uber" doesn't need pyrotechnics and Hollywood dropshipping.

Its star Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Kalanick in what looks like his best role to date.

He manages to convey Kalanick's complex psyche through ups and downs, in moments of cynical humor and mental breakdowns.

At least according to the first two episodes, "The Battle of Uber" also delivers the goods in terms of action: it is rhythmic and immersive and offers looping in the editing that often makes the whole business cool.

In the first episode we find out how the enlightenment "to democratize the world of travel and end the slavery of taxi drivers" came to him, a second later it is revealed that it came in a diner conversation with the original founder of Uber.

These moral U-turns, especially with the arrival of the big money from investors, is what fascinates us in the "bastards who changed the rules" generation.

The fact that this is another true story only gives a reason to continue for another chapter.

As with Adam Neumann and WEWORK, the Uber story also ended with the entrepreneur's voluntary removal from his baby unicorn - only that in the case of the Israeli there is the possibility of another sequel series after we recently discovered that several hundred million were once again invested in his new venture.
