In Naples the prodigy of the 'miracle' of San Gennaro was repeated.
'The sign of blood once again' were the words with which the archbishop of Naples, Monsignor Domenico Battaglia, announced to the faithful gathered in the Cathedral that the blood of the patron saint had liquefied.
The announcement was made at 9.27.
The archbishop's words were greeted with a long applause.
The repetition of the 'miracle' is read by the faithful as a good omen for Naples and Campania.
The miracle occurs three times a year: on 19 September, the day of San Gennaro, the Saturday preceding the first Sunday in May, and on 16 December.
