It was far from won.

But the cetacean, stranded on the beach of Ploéven, in Finistère, managed to regain the sea this night from Monday to Tuesday.

A return to the water that Sea Shepherd describes as “miraculous”.

"He put all his energy into leaving and with our help, he got there, it was magnificent", described the association on its Twitter account.

The whale, visibly young, which measured 12 m and weighed eight tonnes according to France Bleu, had been discovered on the beach by walkers on Monday morning.

During the day, the cetacean had been partly covered with damp sheets to ease its suffering.

"Its skin is very fragile, it is made to be in the water all the time", explained Bernard Martin, volunteer of the National Stranding Network (RNE), working in coordination with the Pélagis Observatory.

“He is not dead but he is in agony,” he added.

A first attempt had been made with a boat and straps, in vain.

Three whales in three weeks

Two backhoe loaders were dispatched to the scene to dig a trench down to the sea, on the one hand to relieve the animal of its own weight, as explained by Sea Shepherd, but also in the hope of facilitating the exit. of the cetacean when the tide would return to its highest, during the night.

A success.

It is the third whale to have washed up on the beaches of Finistère in three weeks.

The first two cetaceans were stranded a few days apart on the island of Sein and on a beach in Tréguennec in the bay of Audierne.

But, unlike that of Ploéven, both are dead.
