After approval chaos: Frankfurt medicine prospects can breathe easy

The decision should be made on Tuesday: anyone who has been accepted and then rejected to study medicine at the university in Frankfurt am Main can probably study their desired subject after all.

According to SPIEGEL information, the first offers of study places could still be sent out on Tuesday: For almost 300 people interested in studying medicine at the University of Frankfurt, a week-long thriller comes to an end.

At the end of August, the high school graduates were each allocated a place at the University of Frankfurt and then taken away again.

The reason: The university had wrongly assumed far too high capacities for the coming winter semester.

This had dramatic consequences: those affected were also kicked out of the application process at all other universities in Germany.

Since then, the Goethe University in Frankfurt, the Conference of Ministers of Education (KMK) and the Foundation for University Admissions (SfH) have been looking for a solution in numerous special meetings.

A good week ago, 31 prospective dentists were able to breathe a sigh of relief, they are now getting study places in Frankfurt am Main.

For the remaining 251 people interested in studying human medicine, a solution was also within reach on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the participants in the meeting, the SfH Board of Trustees unanimously decided last Friday to introduce an additional round in the distribution of the coveted medical study places.

All interested parties who would have received secure offers from other universities in addition to the Frankfurt study place should now actually be offered at least one further study opportunity.

"We were able to get enough study places in the past few days," one participant told SPIEGEL.

The first offers to those affected could therefore be sent as early as Tuesday from the "Hochschulstart" portal.

The situation is more difficult for those applicants who would normally have failed on the numerus clausus for medicine because of a poorer average grade at the Abitur and who only temporarily got their place at the university because of the mistake made by the University of Frankfurt.

They could be taken into account in the succession process from the beginning of October - if the board of trustees agrees in its meeting on Tuesday afternoon.
