Quite a few scientific studies have been conducted on nuts, and most of them have come to a fairly uniform conclusion - they are very good for our health.

Now, a new study, in which researchers reviewed a 20-year diet history and 30 years of physical and clinical measurements, found that participants who ate walnuts early in life were more likely to be more physically active, eat a higher quality diet, and experience a better disease risk profile Heart when we got old.



These new findings come from the Cardiovascular Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) study - a long-term and ongoing study supported by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health in the US, and its purpose is to examine the development of risk factors for heart disease over time.

The findings also reinforce the proposition that walnuts may be an easy and accessible food choice that improves a range of heart disease risk factors when eaten in early to mid-life.



In the current study recently published in the journal Nutrition, Metabolism, & Cardiovascular Diseases, researchers from the University of Minnesota School of Public Health note that a possible explanation for the results may stem from the unique combination of nutrients found in walnuts and their effect on health.

Walnuts are the only tree nut that is an excellent source of plant-based omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid which research shows may play a role in heart health, brain health and healthy aging.

Additionally, about a handful of these nuts contains a variety of other important nutrients to support overall health, including 4 grams of protein, 2 grams of dietary fiber, and a good source of magnesium.

Walnuts also offer a variety of antioxidants, including polyphenols.

Stephen, an epidemiology and community health specialist at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health "Nut consumers showed an advantage with respect to diet quality, but walnut consumers also appeared to have a better heart disease risk factor profile than the other groups, even after accounting for overall diet quality. An increase in life expectancy of 1.3 years

A study conducted about a year ago by a team of researchers from Harvard University discovered a connection between eating more walnuts and a longer life expectancy and a lower risk of death among adults.

"What we learned from this study is that even a few handfuls of walnuts a week may help promote longevity, especially among those whose diet quality is not good to begin with. This is a practical tip that could be possible for people looking to improve their health," says lead researcher Yanping Li of the School of Health The public at Harvard.

The findings appear in the journal Nutrients.



The researchers report that consuming five or more servings of nuts per week may provide the greatest increase in life expectancy.

Nutritionists consider a handful (about 30 grams) of walnuts as one serving.

Eating five or more servings each week was associated with a 14 percent lower risk of death from all causes.

The study authors also found a 25 percent lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease, and an increase in life expectancy of 1.3 years compared to people who never eat walnuts.
