One in two French people cannot get out of a low salary

The government has been encouraging companies and branches for several months to review their salary grid to be more attractive.


This is a worrying finding and could, in part, explain the recruitment difficulties in certain sectors.

Some 45% of French people who received a low salary in 2015 - or according to the OECD definition, less than two-thirds of the median salary - did not experience an increase in their remuneration the following year, according to a study. from INSEE published on Tuesday.

After four years, i.e. in 2019, 26% of them were still stuck in this low-wage trap, i.e. below 1,310 euros net monthly – a level slightly above the minimum wage.

Among the latter, half of the employees were able to temporarily get out of this situation before returning to it and the others remained in this situation for four years

In addition, 18% of workers who had a low salary in 2015 were no longer employed in 2019, and 6% of them then received an unemployment benefit.

In France, nearly 8% of employees are affected by a situation of low pay.

Well aware of this problem which is detrimental to activity, and which may put some people off returning to work, the government has been encouraging companies and branches for several months to review their salary grid to be more attractive.

According to INSEE, it is more often women, young people under 26 and those working in the tertiary sector who receive low wages.

If the executive wants to achieve full employment by 2027 – i.e. an unemployment rate of around 5% – it will have no choice but to look into this subject.
