When it comes to job offers, the requirements do not have to match your skills 100 percent in order for you to be considered for the advertised job.
If you are reorienting yourself professionally, you will sift through many job offers.
You make notes about jobs or bookmark them because a job sounds interesting but you can't bring yourself to apply.
Sometimes smaller requirements do not completely match your CV or more professional experience is required.
However, you shouldn't be put off by this.
Complete your application anyway, even if your skills don't match the job vacancy 100 percent.
An analysis by
the German Economic Institute (IW)
shows that you don't need the perfect match to be hired.

Job offer and employee go together so well
For the analysis, IW included the data from companies and applicants in the period from 2018 to spring 2022 from Hays in Germany.
The positions and skills examined are senior positions with an academic background.
A total of 53,327 datasets with 282 professions were collected, mostly from the IT, finance, engineering and medical fields.
The researchers were able to identify an overall decline in the matching quality between employees and the company's job offer within the period under investigation.
2018 | 2021 | |
---|---|---|
Matching quality in percent | 60.5 | 58.4 |
The personal skills and skills required by the company's job opening matched less than two-thirds (58.4 percent) in the past year.
According to the researchers, one of the reasons for this could be that the labor supply is becoming increasingly restricted.
However, a shift in the occupational and age structure is also conceivable.
The requirements of job offers and the skills of the applicants match only 58.4 percent.

Job offer and employee – it goes so well together
profession | 2018 | 2019 | 2020 | 2021 |
---|---|---|---|---|
Helpdesk/Support | 46.0% | 42.2% | 46.8% | 43.3% |
buyer | 61.2% | 58.7% | 64.3% | 55.7% |
Financial Accountant | 54.8% | 54.9% | 51.9% | 53.5% |
designer | 63.4% | 62.8% | 61.5% | 61.3% |
The data comes from Hays and the Institute of German Economics, only excerpts of the results are presented here.
The researchers also looked at how the quality of skills is compatible with the age of the employees:
profession | under 30 years | 30 to 50 years | 50 to 70 years |
---|---|---|---|
Helpdesk/Support | about 35 percent | about 45 percent | about 49 percent |
buyer | about 53 percent | about 58 percent | about 63 percent |
Financial Accountant | about 43 percent | about 51 percent | about 58 percent |
designer | about 52 percent | about 63 percent | about 66 percent |
According to those responsible for the analysis, the differences between the age of the employees and the skills available have increased over the years.
It is conceivable that younger employees could improve and learn skills while they were still working.
For example, this could explain the pattern that older employees have more suitable skills.

Another aspect of the analysis of job offers and skills
According to IW, the employment relationship between the person and the company is also important.
There are differences with freelancers or external employees.
The matching quality is higher for freelancers than for permanent employees.
This is probably due to the fact that freelancers should deliver quality immediately, while permanent employees are more likely to be introduced to the tasks and challenges.
