Benjamin Giorgio Galli had enlisted with the international brigade fighting alongside the Kiev forces in early March and was in the area south of Karkhiv when he was killed in a bombing raid.

His injuries were too serious, Galli died at the hospital in Kiev, where his parents, Italian father and Dutch mother are now, to take his body home.

Growing up in the province of Varese, Benjamin Galli had moved to the Netherlands and also had Dutch citizenship.

He had been in Ukraine since last spring and had enlisted in the ranks of the Kiev army, posting some uniformed photos on his profile.

"I love you, you will always be in my thoughts, your smile will be in my prayers, brother Ben, hero of Ukraine", wrote one of his comrades in English.
