WhatApp, a popular messaging app owned by the Meta group, also makes a foray into entertainment.

As Variety reports, it will launch its first project later this month: a short film with NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo.

In the 12-minute film titled 'Naija Odyssey', the professional basketball player "tells the story of him reconciling his roots, birthplace and sense of belonging to intercultural worlds," according to the description of WhatsApp.

The athlete signed a sponsorship deal with the platform in February of this year.

"Naija Odyssey is a story that reinforces how WhatsApp helps us embrace our multifaceted lives," Vivian Odior, WhatsApp's Global Head of Marketing, told Variety.

The short film will premiere on Prime Video on September 21st.

And it will be released on WhatsApp social accounts, including its YouTube channel, according to the newspaper.

The short film represents WhatsApp's foray into entertainment, an unusual feat for a messaging app.

However, unlike the path taken by tech giants like Apple on original content, 'Naija Odyssey' seems to be a way to promote a brand given that Antetokounmpo has recently signed a sponsorship agreement with WhatsApp, also a novelty for the messaging platform.
