Australia locates some 230 whales stranded on remote Tasmanian beach

Australian authorities found some 230 pilot whales stranded near Macquarie Harbor on Tasmania's west coast on Wednesday and only half appeared to be alive, according to the state's Environment and Natural Resources Ministry.

Aerial footage shows dozens of black cetaceans sprawled out along a beach where icy water from the south meets sand.

"The response to the strandings in this area is complex," the statement states, referring to the difficult access to this wild area of ​​the island.

Almost two years earlier, in the same area there was another massive stranding of almost 500 pilot whales, also known as pilot whales, of which only 100 survived.

A day earlier, 14 sperm whales died after being stranded on a beach on the southern King Island, also in the Tasmanian region.

These and other marine mammals are frequently stranded on the coasts of southern Australia and New Zealand, without experts having been able to clarify the reasons, although they usually attribute them to diseases, navigation errors, sudden changes in tides, persecution predators or extreme weather conditions.

A team from the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Tasmania, in the south of the country, travels to the area to proceed with the rescue work of the stranded specimens on a sandy surface of Ocean beach, in which they will collaborate with other authorities .
