Bought too much lettuce that you can't use in time?

With the newspaper tip, it stays fresh for over ten days.

Green salads such as iceberg lettuce, lettuce or romaine lettuce are healthy and can be prepared in a variety of salads.

You only have a problem if you have bought too much and can't keep up with the recycling - because lettuce wilts quite quickly.

Wilted lettuce: Normally lettuce only stays fresh for a few days

Lettuce should be bought as fresh as possible and processed quickly, as it wilts quickly.

Correct storage is enough to counteract this.

Do you know the kitchen towel with vinegar trick?

If you do the following, lettuce will stay crisp for a few days:

  • If you bought lettuce in a plastic bag or box: out with it!

Plastic bags seal in the moisture.

Microorganisms can easily form, which can spoil the salad.

  • Remove wilted and brown leaves directly, then the rest of the lettuce will last longer.

However, you should not wash the lettuce if you want to store it first.

  • Put a few drops of vinegar on a kitchen towel dampened with water and wrap the lettuce in it.

This protects it from drying out.

  • Place the salad in the crisper at the bottom of the refrigerator.

  • Under no circumstances should you store lettuce next to fruit and vegetables that will ripen later, for example apples and tomatoes - they accelerate the ripening process!

Storage tip: Thanks to newspaper, lettuce can be stored for weeks

But what do you do if you want to keep lettuce in stock a little longer, for example because you are going on vacation and can no longer use it all?

There is also a very practical tip for this.

You will need newspaper for the:

  • Wrap the lettuce tightly in a thick layer of newspaper.

  • Then put the lettuce packet in an air-permeable bag.

  • Place the bag in the bottom of the refrigerator's crisper.

Wrapped in this way, the salad will stay fresh for at least ten days, if not longer.

By the way, newspaper is also a great tool when storing mushrooms, to extend their shelf life and to keep out strange smells.

Tip: Make wilted lettuce crisp again

If you are too slow and the lettuce has already got wilted leaves, you can easily "refresh" it.

The emphasis here is on wilted, not spoiled, then lettuce naturally belongs in the bin.

The freshness trick works for most lettuce and leafy greens like lettuce, romaine lettuce, and iceberg lettuce.

Fill a bowl with cold water and add a tablespoon of sugar.

Put the lettuce in the water for 10 minutes.

Then drain - and you have crunchy lettuce leaves again.
