The Golden Globes will be broadcast live on television again next year.
"We are thrilled to announce the return of the Golden Globe Awards on NBC on January 10, 2023," the Foreign Press Association (HFPA) said on Twitter and Instagram.
With the Globes, the association awards one of the most important film and television awards in the USA.
The Association of Foreign Press came under pressure in 2021 due to allegations of racism, sexism, bullying and corruption.
Many stars criticized the distributors for lack of diversity.
Companies suspended cooperation.
In January of this year, the long-standing in-house broadcaster NBC canceled the traditional TV broadcast of the award gala.
Nominees stayed away from the event.
The names of the winners were announced only via the HFPA association's social media accounts.
At the beginning of the year, the association announced that the prize would in future be awarded by a private company.
As part of a restructuring, the pool of Golden Globe Awards judges has now expanded and become more diverse.
A diversity consultant was hired and a new board elected.
In a joint statement from the HFPA and NBC, the broadcaster acknowledged the efforts of the Globe distributors to innovate within the association.
They would welcome back the Golden Globes in January for their 80th anniversary, announced Frances Berwick of the media group NBCUniversal.
The show will also run on its streaming service Peacock.
However, the agreement only applies to 2023. According to the announcement, the HFPA association is then entitled to pursue “new opportunities” for the future distribution of the show at home and abroad.
Declining ratings
The audience ratings for television award ceremonies have fallen significantly in recent years: Traditionally, the Oscar ceremony in the USA is the most-watched program of the year after the Super Bowl sporting event.
According to information from the industry portal "Deadline", around 16 million TV viewers watched the Oscar ceremony in 2022.
The number fell to the second-lowest level in history.
For the Emmy Awards, the “Variety” portal reported a decline of more than 25 percent for 2022 compared to the previous year.
The Golden Globes had already fallen more than 60 percent in 2021.
A longer-term comeback of the Globe Gala on NBC should therefore also depend on the ratings.
All that is known about the show so far is that it will again take place in the elegant Hotel Beverly Hilton.
Further details, such as the moderation or participating star presenters, were not initially known.
The nominations in the usual 25 film and television categories are to be announced on December 12th.
