Autumn is the harvest time for walnuts.
When harvesting and storing, you should pay attention to a few things.
We have some tips.
Walnuts are very healthy.
Although they have a high fat content of up to 60 percent, they are unsaturated fatty acids that are essential for a balanced diet.
Walnuts are also very tasty - whether in muesli, cake or walnut bread.
The harvest time for walnuts is from mid-September to the end of October.
If you have a walnut tree in your garden, you can start harvesting during this time.
You should take a few things into account.
Only collect walnuts that fell from the tree
Harvesting walnuts is not difficult because you just have to collect them from the ground.
It is best to wear gloves when doing this, as the tannins on the skins can leave stains on clothing and skin that are difficult to remove.
Do not try to cut or shake the nuts directly from the branch.
This could damage the tree, resulting in fewer walnuts growing back next year.
However, if the green shell opens by itself, you can access it.
Basically, the walnuts are only ripe anyway when they fall down by themselves.
Ideally, collect the nuts as quickly as possible.
Otherwise, if they are left on the ground for a long time, they could start to get moldy or be infested with insects.
Walnuts can be stored properly for several years

After you have collected the walnuts, remove the remains of the green outer shell with a brush - not with water!
If the green shell is not easy to remove, let the nuts dry for a day.
Then they have to dry in a warm, dry and shady place for at least a month.
This is to reduce the moisture in the nuts and prevent mold from forming.
In this way, walnuts in the shell can be kept for several years if stored in a cool and dry place.
As soon as the nuts are dry, it is advisable to keep them in a dark place with as little air as possible - for example in a net, basket or bowl.
