Legal enforcement might be difficult to achieve in the gambling sector because of the nature of online play. Despite state governments' attempts to restrict access to just licensed providers, consumers may still travel to offshore sites. There are concerns that this raises the risk of harm and decreases revenue collection. Yet it by no means implies a slump in activity soon.

Online casinos are now legal in many states and operators need licenses to operate. Unfortunately, a sizable percentage of the country's online gaming markets are still reluctant to fully commit. Ohio is one of the US states that have been reluctant to legalize internet gambling. Despite this, it is impossible to ignore the state's enormous potential in the burgeoning online gaming industry.

A Booming Land-based Casino and Racino Industry

Even before we get to the topic of playing at online casinos in Ohio, we have to look at what the state-sanctioned gaming sector looks like in the state. Currently, eleven casinos or racinos are open in the state of Ohio. There are a total of seven "racinos" (racetracks with casino gambling) and four "stand-alone" casinos. These are the Horseshoe Casinos in Cleveland and Cincinnati and the Hollywood Casinos in Columbus and Toledo.

Before 2009, Ohioans had to go to neighboring states with legal casinos if they wanted to try their luck. Many made the trip to neighboring Indiana, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Michigan. Ohioans voted in favor of a proposition in November 2009 that would legalize the construction of four casinos throughout the state. These casinos would be located in the cities of Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland, and Toledo.

The anticipated $600 million in tax income generated by the casinos was to be shared out among the state's school districts and municipalities.

For a state that was losing money to casinos in neighboring Ohio, the decision to open four commercial casinos was a no-brainer. The gambling industry in Ohio is booming, and visitors may choose from a wide variety of games. These include slot machines and classic table games like roulette, blackjack, craps, baccarat, and poker among others.

The Ohio Casino Control Commission oversees a network of third-party testing labs whose purpose is to ensure the integrity of all casino games. Gaming Laboratories International, BMM International, and Eclipse Compliance Testing are all auditing organizations recognized by the Commission.

Similarly, the racinos in Ohio may provide the same gambling options as those in surrounding states including Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Racinos are restricted to providing only VLT machines and not table games. Ohio's racinos have become so well-liked that the state's four historic casinos have reported declines in revenue as a result.

The Arrival of Legalized Sports Betting

The introduction of sports betting in the Buckeye State is another notable development. Over 300 sports betting licenses have been granted by the Ohio Casino Control Commission in advance of the market opening in 2023. Online (type A) and in-person (type B) licenses have been granted to a variety of companies, including the Cleveland Browns, JACK Casino, JACK Thistledown Racino, Hollywood Casino Toledo, and the Cincinnati Reds.

The Casino Control Commission of Ohio has designated January 1, 2023, as the official launch date for all sportsbooks in the state. In preparation for its debut, the OCCC is now working on a set of regulations, applications, and other requisites. Sports betting in Ohio is expected to be a $1 billion market within the first year or two after legalization, with forecasted growth to $3.35 billion in subsequent years.

And… Offshore Online Casinos

Due to the global nature of the betting business, offshore sites are always on the lookout for ways to improve the odds they provide their customers. Gamblers from every corner of the globe may find a home at one of these offshore sites. It's hardly surprising that gamblers in Ohio can't resist the tempting nature of offshore online casinos.

Bonuses and loyalty programs are just a few of the ways that offshore casinos battle for players' allegiance. That's why, as compared to traditional casinos, online gambling offers a far more exciting betting experience.

Even though the United States doesn't permit them, it is generally accepted that offshore casinos and sportsbooks are regulated and licensed by their respective countries of origin. Using them won't get you into problems with the law, therefore players may use them freely.

What This Means for Online Casinos in Ohio

The number of persons who would play online casino games was formerly estimated to be lower than what proponents of online gambling now claim it to be. Recent user activity on offshore gaming sites is used as a basis for many of the projections. Still, it's no lie that daily, more and more individuals join the ranks of those who visit offshore sites. Many of these gamblers have said they would move to more legitimate sites if only they were made accessible.

There may have been more emphasis on consumer safety than on revenue generation behind the first proposal to authorize internet casinos in Ohio. A look at the success of similar businesses in the gaming industry suggests this may be a lucrative endeavor. While the gambling industry as a whole has had its share of ups and downs, land-based casinos have managed to thrive. In addition, the state has now recognized the full potential of online gambling thanks to the upcoming launch of online sports betting.

In general, the options for offshore locations are far more extensive than those at land-based establishments. American gamblers who don't live in one of the states that has legalized the industry but who still want to enjoy a large selection of casino games seem to choose offshore sites. For Ohioans, there is simply very little choice.

On the other hand, the final decision rests with the bettor. When it comes to betting from overseas, bettors have a greater variety of options to pick from as long as they have done the necessary research. That is likely to remain the case until legal online betting finally arrives in Ohio. Hopefully, it is sooner rather than later.
